Beijing, China, August 7, 2014-On August 4, SGCC announced the winning parties for the bidding of “1000MW/±320kV Xiamen Island VSC-HVDC Demonstration Project”. C-EPRI was awarded with all the converter valves for both end converter stations.
The 1000MW/±320kV scheme is the first of its kind in the world to adopt a real bipolar configuration. It also has the highest capacity and voltage ratings worldwide, with two converter stations linked via 10.7km subsea cables. Commercial operation is scheduled in 2015.
C-EPRI’s HVDC Flexible technology will be utilized to materialize this connection. The benefits associated with it include independent control of both active and reactive power, capability of feeding into passive networks, and inherent STATCOM functionality, etc. These unique features will enable security of electricity supplies as well as improved grid reliability.
SGCC initiated the planning and research of VSC-HVDC technology as early as 2006. C-EPRI has taken the lead in relevant R&D activities and equipped itself with convincing capabilities of key technology research, core equipment development and project demonstration over these years.
In July 2011, C-EPRI successfully delivered Nanhui Wind Farm Integration Project, China’s first VSC-HVDC scheme. In early 2013, the second generation of VSC converter valve and Valve Base Controller aiming at 1000MW/±320kV applications achieved an unprecedented success by passing all the type tests specified in IEC62501 with witness of DNV KEMA; it was then accredited by China’s National Energy Administration a few months later.
The winning of the bid not only reinforces C-EPRI’s leading position in the Chinese market, but also builds up confidence in itself to tap further into the international market.
